Making Impactful Media
by Jermaine Nelson
What Did We Do?
When I arrived in my church district in North Carolina, I was presented with two churches—Ebenezer and Gethsemane SDA Church. Gethsemane, located in Kinston, faced significant challenges, including being in one of the most economically depressed areas of the state. Our church had no cameras, no internet, and only 18-20 members in attendance on a regular Sabbath. When we sought to install internet for live streaming, the estimated cost was exorbitant. But God made a way, and we were able to get it for free! Through intentional investment in media ministry, we tripled our regular attendance, baptized dozens of individuals, and now see over 100 attendees at major events. The power of media transformed our reach, making our small church visible to thousands online.
Why Did We Do It?
We believe quality media production is no longer optional—it is essential. Ministry without quality media is like a sermon without sound. You may be speaking, but people aren’t hearing you. While traditional door-to-door outreach has its place, digital platforms allow us to meet people where they are.
The Bible says in 1 Chronicles 12:32 that the sons of Issachar "understood the times and knew what Israel should do." As church leaders, we must recognize the changing landscape of evangelism. With billions of people on social media—Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok—our mission field is now online. We no longer need to wait for a mission trip to reach the world. We can fulfill the Great Commission every day through digital media ministry.
How We Did It
Maximized Google Presence – The first place people search for a church is Google. We updated our Google profile, encouraged members to leave reviews, and made sure our service times and location were easily accessible. A strong Google presence leads to more first-time visitors.
Prioritized Social Media Engagement – We identified the platforms most relevant to our audience and started posting regularly. Even without a media team, I dedicated one hour per week to creating devotional videos and sermon clips.
Leveraged AI and Simple Editing Tools – Using AI tools and mobile-friendly apps, we created high-quality content without needing expensive equipment or professional skills.
Encouraged Member Involvement – Even without a designated media team, I found willing volunteers and trained them. Eventually, we built a small but effective media ministry.
Advice For Pastors Who Want to Take the Journey
Start with what you have - A smartphone and consistency are more valuable than high-end equipment.
Know your audience - Research where your community spends time online and focus your efforts there.
Prioritize Google visibility - Ensure your church is easy to find online and has positive reviews.
Commit to consistency - Whether you post once a week or daily, consistency builds engagement.
Trust God’s provision - We started with nothing, yet God provided. If He did it for us, He can do it for you.
