Partnering together
with NAD Ministerial Association, NAD Health Ministries, and several other partners, we have collected a number of research studies focusing on the health of pastors. This includes focus group interviews, survey data, and more.
We are now engaging in a process of transforming information into practice. With upcoming educational material, support groups for pastors, and a variety of interventions, it is our hope that pastors and their families recognize that their health and wellbeing are valued and important.

Recognizing and Addressing Barriers to Pastors’ Spiritual Wellbeing
What We Know About the Spiritual Challenges Pastors Face
Percent of Pastors who agreed or strongly agreed that they faced the following challenges[1]:
BOLSTERING SPIRITUAL WELLBEING
-
“For me, it's been a regular devotional time every day and inviting my family to do it also. That's how to keep accountable with devotional time . . . I have one devotional that I do with my family. Actually, before that, I’d like to do by myself.”
-
“I think spiritual retreats we do that at [my] conference, it’s really one of the most awesome [experiences]….. And our conference does it spring and fall. And we can go up to our summer camp, and they pay for the food—it’s wonderful. But it’s just three days, and most of it is silent, and then we have sometimes with group activities, but just getting away.”
-
“When I was spiritually dry, I never had that burning bush experience, when some big thing happened. It came to me in small things. Like a song service, a day off, [having] conversations with [another] pastor, just some small things . . . And if you recognize the small moment, you get that ‘Aha’ moment. That works for me. As I said, a day off, just something relaxing.”
-
“I feel like ministry hasn't always been easy. But I am thankful for that because the difficult times are the times where my spiritual life is easier. It’s when things are going smooth and feel like you got it, that you’re going down.”
-
“Sometimes you need to sit back and then let others minister to you. Because that is so crucial. They have been placed there to also help you to journey through your pain, or your circumstances. And so [how do I do] it in my church? I preach twice, maximum, a month and the rest I distribute, because I want the other ministers to do it.”
BARRIERS TO SPIRITUAL WELLBEING [2,3]:
-
“When it is expected from you to give, and to give, and to give, and to teach, and to be a wise man and a counselor, that comes with a pastoral job description….I feel that I am kind of exhausted, and my well is empty. And I'm just not excited by helping people, by preaching, by ministering anymore.”
“A lot of times I’ve found a challenge for my spirituality is not feeling guilty about setting up those boundaries so that I can come apart and rest awhile and spend my personal time with Jesus, because in ministry, we understand that we reach out to people, but what happens is there is this creep into the time that is supposed to be for you and the Lord.”
-
“Sometimes we feel like, if we have a problem, it's because we're not praying enough. And that's something I really struggled with, like I'm not supposed to have this, because we're supposed to enjoy that peace that passes understanding… And if I don't have that, then means there is something wrong, which means I have to pray more. And I prayed more, and I failed. And I just get even more discouraged, and I'm like, ‘No, so that means I have to pray more.’ It's a vicious cycle, a vicious cycle.”
-
“What creates spiritual difficulty, is where there is isolation and not good interaction. But what encourages greater spirituality is when there is a free mingling of the pastors together on a regular basis where they are able to share, giving them time to share and interact in a way that is productive.”
